INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS IN PAKISTAN

May 27-28, 2025, Islamabad

ORGANIZED BY: GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF PAKISTAN (GSP), ISLAMABAD

Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) being the premier organization in the geoscience research in the country, is responsible for the development and advancement of earth sciences in Pakistan. GSP is organizing an international conference on geological hazards (earthquakes and landslides) in Pakistan, to encourage research in assessment and mitigation of geological hazards, and countering the adverse effects of climate change. The conference aims to bring together international experts to share knowledge and experience on geological hazards, with a special focus on use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology. The conference will foster research collaboration, and sharing of the ideas to enhance disaster preparedness capabilities against these natural disasters. Through discussion and knowledge sharing, we seek to foster a culture of resilience and safeguard the communities from the devastating impacts of geological hazards.

Background:

Pakistan is located in a seismically active region and has a long history of devastating earthquakes and landslides. Understanding these geological hazards and their impact is crucial for disaster management and mitigation.

Geological Survey of Pakistan is leading a Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) titled “Pakistan National Research Program on Geological Hazards (Earthquakes & Landslides), Data Acquisition along Active Faults and Identification of Potential Landslide Hotspot Zones” that focuses on studying geological hazards, particularly earthquakes and landslides, in Pakistan. The program aims to acquire data along active faults and identify potential landslide hotspot zones in order to better understand the geological processes that lead to these hazards and develop strategies to reduce the risks associated with them.

Landslides triggered by earthquakes are one of the classic examples of inter-relation between different hazards and their risk phenomena. The symposium also aims to focus on Mass Movement Hazards, with a particular emphasis on changing climatic conditions.

We therefore invite research scientists and engineers, disaster response and mitigation experts, and decision and policy makers from around the globe to present the latest developments in earthquake and landslide vulnerability and risk assessment. In particular, advances and perspectives of GNSS technology in earthquake studies, and associated case studies, are of interest.

Themes:

  • Integration of GNSS data with other geospatial technologies for comprehensive hazard analysis
  • Challenges and opportunities in deploying and maintaining GNSS infrastructure in Pakistan
  • International cooperation and knowledge sharing in geological hazard management
  • Cross-border data sharing for GNSS-based hazard monitoring
  • Policies and Regulation: International policies and legal aspects related to GNSS usage and data sharing
  • The interplay of climate change and mass movement hazards in Pakistan
