Date: 19-01-2026 Time(PST): 11:21 AM Region: NW of Hunza
Magnitude: PMD=M 5.8, USGS= M 5.99 Depth: 21.7 Km
Location: 36.706 N, 74.449 E
Brief Summary: The epicenter lies northwest of Hunza District Gilgit-Baltistan, within the Northern Metasedimentary Zone of the Karakoram Block, and at the contact of metasediments and Karakoram Batholith. The epicenter is very close to the Upper Hunza Fault, which brings Ordovician to Permian rocks over the younger Mesozoic sequence. The area is tectonically active and numerous low-intensity earthquakes frequently occur in the region. The latest such seismic activity has been documented in the Chuperson valley. The Upper Hunza Fault is a major regional structure characterized by brittle to brittle- ductile deformation, accommodating differential movement between adjacent lithotectonic units. This active fault gets repeatedly reactivated under the present day compressional stress regime generated by the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates making the area prone to recurrent seismicity.
