Symposium on Geological Hazards (Earthquakes & Landslides) in Pakistan

Welcome to the International Symposium on Geological Hazards (Earthquakes & Landslides) in Pakistan, organized by the Geological Survey of Pakistan. This prestigious event brings together leading experts, researchers, and practitioners from around the world to explore the latest advancements in understanding and mitigating geological hazards. Our symposium aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, highlighting innovative solutions and best practices for studying earthquakes and landslides, monitoring and risk reduction. Join us as we delve into the critical role of GNSS in enhancing our ability to predict, monitor, and respond to these natural disasters, ultimately contributing to safer and more resilient communities worldwide.

Background:

Pakistan is located in a seismically active region and has a long history of devastating earthquakes and landslides. Understanding these geological hazards and their impact is crucial for disaster management and mitigation.

Geological Survey of Pakistan is leading a Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) titled “Pakistan National Research Program on Geological Hazards (Earthquakes & Landslides), Data Acquisition along Active Faults and Identification of Potential Landslide Hotspot Zones” that focuses on studying geological hazards, particularly earthquakes and landslides, in Pakistan. The program aims to acquire data along active faults and identify potential landslide hotspot zones in order to better understand the geological processes that lead to these hazards and develop strategies to reduce the risks associated with them.

Landslides triggered by earthquakes are one of the classic examples of inter-relation between different hazards and their risk phenomena. The symposium also aims to focus on Mass Movement Hazards, with a particular emphasis on changing climatic conditions.

We therefore invite research scientists and engineers, disaster response and mitigation experts, and decision and policy makers from around the globe to present the latest developments in earthquake and landslide vulnerability and risk assessment. In particular, advances and perspectives of GNSS technology in earthquake studies, and associated case studies, are of interest.

The Symposium Schedule and Themes:

The symposium will run over two days (May 27-28, 2025) followed by five days field trip to Himalayas (May 29-June 02, 2025) and will be divided into following (but not limited to) four themes:

  • Seismic Hazard Assessment and preparedness in Pakistan
  • Tectonic framework of Pakistan with special focus on Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT)
  • GNSS – based Research in Pakistan & its applications in Geological Hazards
  • Navigating Mass Movement Hazards with Changing Climate

Symposium will be in hybrid mode; one can join off-line or online. The meeting’s proceedings will be produced after the symposium.

The symposium is being organized by the Geological Survey of Pakistan, Islamabad.
