Reconnaissance Demographic & Hazard Assessment Survey Of Selected Areas Of AJK & NWFP

Reconnaissance Demographic & Hazard Assessment Survey of selected areas of AJK & NWFP
(2007-2010)
(with Earthquake Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Authority
&
UN Habitat)

On the directives issued by the Prime Minister Secretariat, Islamabad, GSP and ERRA had signed an MOU under which GSP had to carry reconnaissance demographic & hazard assessment survey of selected areas of AJK & NWFP; later, UN Habitat also became part of the project.
GSP experts had extensive field visits for house to house surveys in Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Neelum and Mansehra Districts. Thousands of houses were identified in high hazardous areas; the affectees were compensated to buy some alternate lands in safer areas.

PRELIMINARY STUDY OF GROUND FISSURES IN ORMARA HEADLAND, ORMARA COASTAL REGION

On the request of Pakistan Navy through Prime Minister Secretariat, GSP Islamabad carried out the field investigations during July-August 2007 for the study of ground fissures / cracks in the eastern extremity of the Ormara Headland. Keeping in view the strategic importance of the locality a comprehensive field survey was conducted and it was concluded that the site was very instable due to lithological problems as the incompetent shale and clay beds were overlain by the competent beds of sandstone. The filtration of the rain water through the cracks further aggravated the situation and there was a consistence subsidence of the strata. The piping and caving of the strata caused the differential subsidence at certain places.
After the completion of field work, a detailed report was submitted to concerned quarters. Based on the initial studies, Pakistan Navy had requested GSP to carry out detailed geo-hazard survey.
